McCain's Closing Argument   [Gregory S. McNeal]

The McCain campaign has narrowed the gap in the last two weeks.  Its final touch must be a clear positive message to undecided voters synthesizing why McCain is the right candidate for them.  These voters have their doubts about Obama; now is the time for McCain to give them a reason to vote for him.

The campaign's message of security, prosperity, and country first can form the outline of that message.  McCain's final commercials should be personal — him speaking to the people, or perhaps his voice along with images from his past and the campaign trail.  It should speak to the trust and respect that Americans have for him.  Below I've organized some suggested points thematically with the unifying message of trust (it's probably a 1:30 spot):

"My fellow Americans, as election day draws near, I want to make clear my commitment to you and to our nation.  I know times are tough, and you know that I am a man of my word.  You know you can trust me when I make these promises to you.

"If I am elected President, I will cut your taxes; I won't punish your success.  I will ensure this nation creates jobs by helping small businesses prosper.  I will reject protectionist tariffs that lead to job loss.  I promise I will protect those who have health care and help those who still need it.  I won't do this through a wasteful government program; instead I will do it by empowering you — putting choices and resources in the hands of families and their doctors.

"We cannot forget that the next President must be prepared on day one to lead this nation in an international economic crisis and two ongoing wars.  I've dedicated my life to serving our nation, and I promise you I will lead us through these challenges.  Our enemies and our allies know that I am ready to lead on day one.  They will not seek to test or threaten us while I am President.  I promise to bring our troops home as victors.  I promise to create energy security through domestic sources of energy, and I promise to ensure our long-term security by developing new green technology built right here in America.

"To make good on my promises, I will continue to put politics aside and put country first.  As I always have, I will fight for you and I will honor your trust by cleaning up Washington.  I will cut the wasteful spending, the earmarks, and the cronyism that lead to higher taxes and a culture of corruption.  I won't spread your wealth to chosen groups; instead I'll help you and your neighbors create your own wealth.  Putting country first, ensuring prosperity, and protecting our security are my promises, and they will lead to a better America for all of us.

"My fellow Americans, you've come to know me not just through this campaign, but through my lifetime of service.  I love this country, and in its time of need, it will be my honor to serve you and our nation.  I am humbled to have your trust and your vote."
